Empathy, Procreate and the Magnolia Meter Project ~ Empatía, ProCreate y el proyecto Magnolia Meter

My first Magnolia Meter video (2nd version) where I talk about empathy as depicted by the character, Donnie Smith in the film, Magnolia, as well as empathy in a wider context.

Remember at the end of Magnolia when Jim is talking to Claudia but you can´t make out his words and you´re wondering, What´s he saying?!!! What´s he saying?!!!

Well, here´s what he says –

“I can’t let this go. I can’t let you go. Now, you… you listen to me now. You’re a good person. You’re a good and beautiful person and I won’t let you walk out on me. And I won’t let you say those things – those things about how stupid you are and this and that. I won’t stand for that. You want to be with me… then you be with me. You see?”

I adore this character (no. 9 on the Magnolia Meter. See https://3wishstudios.wordpress.com/2018/01/12/former-quiz-kid-donnie-smith-illustration-and-the-magnolia-meter-project/) so much I´m almost jealous of Claudia. He may not be conventionally handsome but I´ll take a good, decent man over a handsome jerk anyday.

So, with this illustration, I wanted to do something different than the previous two I did. And I´ve always loved the simpler, cartoony styles of artists like Pascal Campion, Mary Blair, Rob Scotton (Russel the Sheep!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️) and Brittney Lee. But, I´ve never worked in that style professionally which, when I have a tight dealine, is something I deeply regret, haha!

John C. Reilly, by the way, with such a distinctive face, was more challenging to cartoonize than I would have thought. I mean, he kept looking like other rather beefy, mustached men. The secret, I think, was getting that amazing brow right. Not sure I did. But, I tried.

Former Quiz Kid Donnie Smith illustration and the Magnolia Meter project

The goal: 1. Illustrate each of the main characters in Magnolia in new ways that challenge and stretch my abilities. 2. Rate each of the characters on a 1 to 10 scale according to how empathetic they were in the film. 3. Use the Magnolia Meter to rate various politicians to just put it out  there that maybe we should judge our political representatives on whether or not they practice the golden rule rather than on how strong/powerful/rich/popular they are.

Those are the goals, anyway 😛 Two characters down, eight to go. The illustrated Magnolia Meter is still a work in progress and might get tweaked, characters bumped up or down still. And the politicians…can anyone name any politician as kind and empathetic as Phil Pharma?!! The only one that come to mind is Nelson Mandella…

The Wunderkind

After months of working on mostly line art, I am feeling the need to experiment, to stretch, to be less literal and more experimental. And Magnolia being one of my all time favorite films, I hope (time allowing) to illustrate each of the major characters, experimenting with something new with each one. I also hope to explore, perhaps through ProCreate video with audio added, the theme of empathy and how each character illustrates different aspects or levels of this and the resulting pain and damage the lack of empathy can inflict.

So, Ive started with Stanley Spector, the wunderkind. I think he is someone we can all relate to, full of possibility, eager to please. And to see how the adults around him, and even the other kids, bully and use him was really infuriating to watch.

Next, sometime soon (hopefully next week) the former quiz kid, Donnie Smith ✌🏽
